Second Pentecost

The holiday of Shavuot commemorates the beginning of the harvest season, the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost morning. The overlap of these three themes on the same day is a marvelous bit of biblical symbolism and prophetic meaning. Two thousand years ago, the early disciples of Yeshua (Jesus) were filled with the Holy Spirit and power.

Acts 2:1-4 When the day of Shavuot had fully come, they were all together in one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues as of fire and rested upon each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

This supernatural experience launched the gospel around the world and extended the kingdom of God to all nations. In explaining the experience to a gathering crowd, Peter (Shimon) proclaimed that this was an initial fulfillment of a great end-times revival that would happen according to the prophecies of Joel. The same experience will happen again but to a much greater extent.

Acts 2:16-18, 21 This is that which was spoken of by the prophet Joel, "It will come to pass in the last days that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and daughters will prophesy; your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. And on my menservants and maidservants in those days, I will pour out My Spirit… And all who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved."

Peter was quoting the prophet Joel. Yet at the end he only quoted half a verse because the conditions were not ready for the second half of the prophecy. (This is similar to Yeshua's quoting the first part of Isaiah 61 in Luke 4 because the second part has to do with the Second Coming, not the First.) Here is the other part of the verse in which Joel described the conditions for the "Second Pentecost."

Joel 2:32 – 3:2 …because in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be a remnant, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors whom the Lord calls. Because behold in those days and at that time as I will restore the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem, I will also gather all nations and bring them down to the valley of Yehoshphat; and there I will enter into judgment with them on account of My people, My heritage Israel…

Amazing! Two thousand years ago there was an initial outpouring of the Holy Spirit. That outpouring launched the gospel to the nations and is continuing today. As the gospel began to reach the ends of the world, God began to restore the nation of Israel and bring the Jews back to Jerusalem. We will be here for the events leading up to the Second Coming. As Israel was being restored, a great war broke out.  Among the generation surviving World War II, God began to call many to believe in Yeshua.

Now a small remnant of Messianic Jews is in place in Israel. The events of the end times are close at hand. A greater World War will one day take place; and at the same time a world-wide outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Messianic remnant in Israel is a sign of the times and a spark of that revival. Let's pray the way the apostles did in the book of Acts and believe for the same results, even greater!
