Glorify God

One of the purposes of our lives is to glorify God. Yeshua started His two most famous prayers with a request to glorify his father in heaven: "Our father in heaven holy be your name" (Matthew 6:10); "Father, glorify your son so that the son can glorify you" (John 17:1).

By desiring to glorify God, we at the same time purify our own motives.  We look at every situation in life as an opportunity to give him glory.  Once Yeshua's disciples asked him why a blind man was born blind (John 9), and another time why he had not come earlier to heal Lazarus (John 11).  We tend to analyze why bad things happen, and ask who is right or wrong in every situation.

However Yeshua did not answer as they expected. In effect he told them that they were asking the wrong questions. He changed how they looked at the situation.  To him the issue was simply "how can God be glorified here?"

John 9:3 – Neither did he sin, nor his parents; this is only so that the works of God will be revealed.
John 11:4 – This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, so that son of God might be glorified.

Responding Rightly

Many times we also ask all kinds of useless questions.  We argue about things between ourselves instead of seeking what would give God glory.  God is sovereign and all-powerful.  In any situation he can provide an answer.  We should respond in a way that will glorify him. 

Seeking to glorify God changes our heart attitude: we are no longer occupied with humanistic explanations or seeking honor for ourselves.  We do not seek revenge or self-justification. We seek a total change of perspective that will bring a breakthrough solution.

Peter had many questions about his life and the lives of the other disciples.  Instead of answering them directly, Yeshua told him to follow God and give him glory at all times right until the last moment of his death.

John 21:19 – He said this to show him the manner of his death so that God could be glorified in him.

Let us also dedicate our response to every situation in a way that will glorify God. Let's seek the glory that comes from God instead of the glory that comes from man (John 5:44) and thus align ourselves with the deeper purposes of God in our lives.

“It was just before the Passover Festival. Yeshua knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world he loved them to the end.” (John 13:1)

The Jewish capital was filled with men and women preparing to celebrate the Passover Seder. As their forefathers had done for generations, Israel was again remembering their deliverance from the bondage of slavery in Egypt and celebrating God's faithfulness to his people.

He had not just sent an angel--but God himself had come and intervened for his beloved Israel. He empowered his servant Moses. The Plagues came. The first born died and the iron doors of slavery which had been locked for 400 years sprung open. Israel left Egypt forever, followed the cloud of glory, crossed the Red Sea and set out on their journey to become a chosen nation displaying the love and mercy of God.

And now on this Passover 2,000 years later, there was one in the crowd who was like none other - the lamb who would take away the sins of the world. He gathered his disciples around him that he might keep this, his last Passover, with them. This time God's glory was not in a cloud but it filled the one who was Emanuel, God with us.

Love Defined

And then in a moment that would forever define true love, this one who was the King of Kings took off his robe, bound a towel around his waist and kneeled before his servants to wash their feet.

In that moment, heaven quaked. Only then was it fully understood who this one is who had chosen to become lowly servant.  And so the way was set forever. Greatness was defined in servant hood. Power was displayed in humility.

The cross still stood before him. The coming hours would only confirm how He had lived before his disciples. The greatness of love was in laying down one's life for another. He would take the lower seat. He would willingly offer himself up as the eternal sacrifice. And by His sacrifice, a people would again be set free and a nation would be given to God forever.

During this Passover, as we remember such a great deliverance, may our hearts be ignited with a passion to see all who are bound - set free by His wonderful love.
